“Beauty” by Jane Martin is a one act play about envy. It is human nature to desire what others have and this fact is shown in the plot and conflict of this play. Martin excellently draws attention to the human folly of envy by combining fantasy, humor, and irony.
The plot of the play focuses on two girls – Carla and Bethany. Carla is envious of Bethany’s intelligence and Bethany envies Carla’s beauty. Both women long for what the other has without realizing the disadvantages the other faces because of the attribute being desired.
