Setting: The book starts off on June 14, 1941 in Kaunas, Lithuania. The book ends in Trofimovsk, North Pole.
Major Characters and Descriptions
-Lina is a fifteen year old Lithuanian girl, with long honey colored hair. Lina is one of your average girls with an extrodinary talent, she can draw. She was accepted into art school. While Lina is extremely talented she is also headstrong, which can lead her into trouble if she doesnt keep her mouth shut. Lina's desire to live is strong, but she comes to question it as the death toll around her grows.
-Jonas is Lina's ten year old brother. He is a sweet boy who shoos out bugs instead of killing them. Jonas is a scared youngster that was thrown into a harsh reality. He was forced to grow up early. Jonas falls sickly mutliple times in the book. Overall Jonas is a good-natured boy. …show more content…

Many of the people from the beggining of the book have died and only a few remain. Kretzsky disappears and sends the prison camp a doctor. This saves Janina and Jonas's lives. The book fast forwards 12 years in the future at this point. It is the year 1955, and diggers uncover a large glass jar filled with papers. The jar contains a letter from Lina and drawings. Lina urges the digger to tell someone about the events that happened to her and the other survivors.
Author Info: Ruta Sepetys was born and raised in Michigan. She was the youngest of three kids, and was raised in a family of music lobers, artists and readers. She now lives in the Hills of Tennessee. Between Shades of Gray was her first published novel and was inspired by her Lithuanian father. She was recently bestowed The Cross Of The Night by the president of Lithuania. Ruta's books are published in 45 countries and she is on a mission to travel to all of them. Ruta Sepetys is a truly remarkable
