For many centuries, women have been fighting for equality. While there has been much progress all over the world, we are far from reaching a truly equal society. Through the simplest acts such as speaking out or getting an education, women are still being reprimanded for their actions. Canada prides itself in being a progressive country, yet events of violence against women are still occurring. An example of this is the Montreal Massacre.
The potency of religious observance is further demonstrated when Lily explains her inward feelings towards the Black Mary statue and religion. Lily thought, “Standing there, I loved myself and I hated myself. That's what the black Mary did to me, made me feel my glory and my shame at the same time” (Kidd 71). Kidd’s last use of Juxtaposition in the passage demonstrates how Lily feels about herself when observing the holy sculpture. Using repetition in syntax, Kidd uses two contrasting pairs of ideas “loved” and “hated,” and “glory” and “shame.”
Maturing in life. At the beginning of life, people are innocent, with life not having a chance to tamper and corrupt them. At the end of life, they 've known loss and heartbreak and life has messed them up. But imagine if people were born all knowing and died as innocent as a baby.
As summarized by www.publishersweekly.com , “In this plainly written, powerful memoir, MacDonald, now 32, details not only his own story of growing up in Southie, Boston's Irish Catholic enclave, but examines the myriad ways in which the media and law enforcement agencies exploit marginalized working-class communities. MacDonald was one of nine children born (of several fathers) to his mother, Helen MacDonald, a colorful woman who played the accordion in local Irish pubs to supplement her welfare checks. Having grown up in the Old Colony housing project, he describes his neighbors' indigence and pride of place, as well as their blatant racism (in 1975 the anti-busing riots in Southie made national headlines) and their deep denial of the organized
04.05b Analyzing the Sine and Cosine Functions Choice #1 f(θ) = cos(θ) • Amplitude: The amplitude of this cosine function is 1 since there is no number in front of cos to represent |a|. The designated amplitude is therefore 1 meaning the maximum = 1 and the minimum = -1. The cos curve will be in between these two points.
In this passage from The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi Durrow, Jesse and Rachel are the only ones there after Brick and Lakeisha left when Jesse took out some drugs to smoke. Rachel decides to follow everything that Jesse says; run into a fountain, dip her head into the water. They end up talking about travelling into his car after being insulted by strangers who were playing rock music. Durrow demonstrates that dissimilarity is only noticeable by those affected by it.
In her autobiography, One Writer’s Beginnings, Eudora Welty illustrates how early memories of reading and books later inspired her to become a fiction writer. She uses intense diction, hyperbole, quotes, examples, and compare and contrast to support her purpose. She speaks in a reminiscent tone to a general audience. Welty narrates her love for literature and acknowledges the individuals that impacted her, ultimately conveying the intensity and value of these experiences.

As a woman, her voice was not very loudly heard, but that didn’t stop her. Even after her death in October of 1818, her legacy continued through her countless writings about the issues of
I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved, bearing gifts of high religion; the very crowns of holy law I brought, and what I touched with my bright confidence, it died; and where I turned the eye of my great faith, blood flowed up. Beware, Goody Proctor---cleave to no faith when faith brings blood. It is mistaken law that leads you to sacrifice. Life, woman, life is God’s most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it. I beg you, woman, prevail upon your husband to confess.
“Plainswoman” by Williams Forrest is about a woman named Nora who moved out west with her husband, Rolf. In this short story, Nora has two flashbacks that tell her journey from New England to her new home on a ranch in the west. When you try new things, you might be afraid in the beginning that by the end of the situation, you won’t be scared anymore and will be a stronger person as a result. In the beginning of the story, it takes place when Rolf and his men are out on the ranch for the spring roundup of the cattle.
During this time period women were held to an unrealistic standard to maintain their purity, not based on their wants and needs, but based on society's view of the ideal woman. It is ironic that García Márquez uses the phrase, “courage to kill myself” leading the reader to believe that the act of committing suicide is a strength rather than a weakness. The foundation of Catholicism is the belief that life is sacred. Angela’s call for help in this moment of despair truly identifies her as a victim. Indicated by the novel, “On the other hand, the fact that Angela Vicario dared put on the veil and the orange blossoms” without being a virgin would be interpreted afterwards as a profanation of the symbols of purity ( García Márquez; p.41).
