In the novel Breath, by Tim Winton, the author conveys the character of Ivan Loons as humorous and tricky with the people around him, and describes the riverbank by utilizing purposeful selection of detail and a personal author's craft. We can see how the author used a purposeful selection of detail in this story by how he chose to describe the setting and how the characters interacted. “Sun blazed down in rods through the big old gums. There were dragonflies in the air above us.” The author tells us in great detail how the setting of the river bank was in the story.
