In "Building Baby from the Genes Up" by Ronald M. Green, Green expresses his view that genetically modifying humans is not necessarily a good thing for human, but that it’s not such a bad thing or inevitable. Green claims that genetic modification is beneficial to society and would help improve living. Green exclaims that genetic modification is an inevitable future and that the quality of the human population will improve. Green proposes the idea that genetic modification will improve the quality of the human population by using it with health related issues such as obesity and dyslexia and that no children will have to suffer anymore because of those problems. Knowing about our gene will give us more freedom according to Green. On the other …show more content…
Hayes reasoning behind his idea that it would not be beneficial but would in fact just create harm to humans. Hayes expresses that there are risks of increasing the existing inequalities, and that’s it would then also reinforce the existing modes of discrimination. Hayes also believes that allowing genetic modification will undermine the foundations of human or civil rights. Hayes also goes into to say that once the genetic modification starts where will people stop at, it will become a techno eugenic rat race. Both Green and Hayes have points going for them and even do both of them tend to do a good job in trying to fight for their cause, Green falls way short of that his refutations only confuse you more and make you wonder if he is fighting for the opposite side, he states a point and then refutes it with another poorly done refutation. Green also relies too much on generalization and is does not live up to what it is supposed to. On the other Hand, Hayes does a better job of getting his point across, he makes some strong statements and back them up making him more …show more content…
Green uses the Popes remarks on genetic modification. Green states that the support the use of genetic modification when it comes curing diseases. Green is using it because he is trying to persuade religious people that using genetic modification is good and even supported by the Catholic church, and that it is also widely accepted by religious traditions. He talking about the when the Pope John Paul II publicly supported genetic modification in 1982 at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope went on to say that the use of genetic modification can help alleviate chromosomal diseases. Hayes on the other part uses assumption and states that parents are now going to enhance and use it to make their children better at sport and use it for cosmetic reasons. Hayes believes that the genetic modification will become a race which will lead to a greater divide in the population. Hayes argues that by using genetic modification the population will seek to enhance themselves for reasons cosmetic, athletic and cognitive reasons which would be passes of to their offspring who would later too enhance their offspring, leading to the eventual loss of the common human
