I read the book Canoeing With the Cree by Eric Sevareid. This book is about two young men by the name of Eric Sevareid and Walter Port. These men were best friends in high school. They decided to seek an adventure that summer by doing something that has never been done before. This was the first time anyone had ever taken a canoe from Minnesota to the North Atlantic Ocean. Their plan was to start in Minneapolis and go to York Factory at the Hudson Bay. They canoed up the Minnesota River, the Little Minnesota River to Browns Valley, portaged to Lake Traverse, the Bois des Sioux River to the Red River of the North which led to Lake Winnipeg, then went down the Nelson River, Gods River, and Hayes River to Hudson Bay, a trip of 2,250 miles. Eric reached over and caught the turtle and kept it in the boat until it was time to make it their dinner. They boiled it and had to add a lot of seasoning. At the first bite, they both yelped and jumped for their water bag. They would not eat the turtle soup again. One of their favorite stories to tell was about a time when they saw a woodchuck swimming across the river and a few hundred yards beyond they saw another animal swimming the same direction. It was a little baby rabbit. They captured the rabbit and helped it get back to the shore. Just before they reached St Peter, Minnesota one of their paddles broke. They would have no spare paddle until they reached Fargo, North Dakota. After 3 weeks of being on the Minnesota River, they traveled over 500 miles. A fourth of their journey was over and from here on out, they would have to paddle upstream. While they were paddling up the lake, they noticed what seems to be a long black log. As they got closer to the log they realized it wasn't a log at all. It had fins and it moved back and forth. It was a sturgeon and it was at least six feet long. As they continued on their journey, they ran into a narrow channel which was full of weeds. They snagged the boat in that channel and it …show more content…
From Fairmont, North Dakota they started canoeing on the Red River of the North. It is said the only rivers in the world that flow north is the Nile in Egypt and the Red River of the North. On July 17th, they had been traveling for one month and paddled about 700 miles. They went to Fargo, North Dakota which was the biggest city they had been to at that point. They purchased another paddle and reinforced the paddle with copper. While they were in Fargo they stayed with a relative. For breakfast that morning they each had 20 pancakes. They felt guilty for eating that much, but we're so hungry after not having good food for a month. They also had their first haircut of the trip in Fargo. After their visit to Fargo, they started back on their voyage just to have to turn around and go back. Walt's had been bitten by a fly and his thumb became very infected. They visited a doctor in Fargo who treated Walt and insisted that they stay with him until he was better. They stayed in Fargo for 11 days. This definitely set their schedule back. From there they stopped in Crookston, North Dakota at another relative's house. By coincidence, Eric's father had called an hour after they had arrived at the house. It
