In Case You Missed It by Sarah Darer Littman creates young adult literature that all teenagers can relate to. In this story, an average girl named Sammy is a senior in high school and she has big ideas and even bigger fantasies. Sammy’s father is the head director of banks that many people are unhappy with. Protests begin to break out, eventually an unidentified hacker gets into the system, into the Wallach family cloud. Now, every text, email, photo and Sammy’s journal entries are published online for the world to see. Her best friends, Rosa and Margo, are now rejecting her, her parents know every rule she broke, and her crush, Jamie Moos, knows exactly how she feels about him. After Sammy’s entire diary was released to the world, everyone hated her. She skips school one of the days that she could no longer take the whispering and staring at her. Sammy comes clean to her mom and says, “I didn’t pick up the phone because I didn’t want you to know I wasn’t at school. And I’m not at school because… because I couldn’t face it, Mom. ….. Hom am I supposed to go to school and people ever again?,” (Littman 149). This shows Sammy at her weakest point in the story, she feels hopeless. Earlier in the book, there was a big promposal in the cafeteria. The girl who was being asked, BethAnn, was forced to yes, or she would have been seen as jerk. Sammy wrote in her diary about how she felt sorry for the girl. Later that week, BethAnn told Gary, the guy that asked her, that she did not really want to go to prom with him and that she felt pressured to say yes. However, Gary slammed her online and everybody took his side, except for Sammy. Once Sammy’s diary was released BethAnn found out someone understood and thanked her. Sammy later said to her friend Noah that “[if] it weren’t for the hackers, BethAnn wouldn’t have known that I hated what Gary did to her,” (Littman 204). This shows that Sammy has begun to think of positive things that came from this experience, rather than the negative. She later confirms that she is beginning to live with the situation when she says, “ But at least I’m able to see there are some silver linings in this very dark cloud, even though I’m still stuck in the middle of it.
