In the past two weeks, I’ve been busy reading the book ‘Cat’s Cradle’, written by Kurt Vonnegut and published by the Penguin Group in 2011. The Penguin Group is stationed in London, England. The book was first published in the United States of America, 1963. For anyone who has interest in that matter. That being said let us take a look at the book itself. I really loved reading Cat’s cradle. The narrator of the story, John, wants to write a book about Felix Hoenniker, a very highly rated dead physicist and most important, one of the founding fathers of the atomic bomb. To do so, he asks the help of the three children of Felix: namely the midget son Newt, the other son Frank and Felix’ daughter, Angelina. As we advance in the story, not only do we learn about Hoenniker and what kind of a person he was, but also about what he has created beside the atomic bomb, namely ice-nine. We learn that Hoenniker doesn’t really care for other people, I see Hoenniker as symbol for the human race itself. As an example for his carelessness: the moment the atomic bomb dropped, he was playing with a cat’s cradle, not even thinking about how a mass destruction at the other side of the world was occurring on that exact moment. And he made the bomb to do it. For him, only science was interesting. In my opinion, Vonnegut tries to tell us a message with his story. Namely that scientific advancement in combination with human stupidity and carelessness is a very dangerous mix. One does not simply ignore the fact that science and the advancement of technology in the last few decades fastened our knowledge and possibilities to solve problems at an incredible rate.
