In the book, Unbound by Ann E. Burg takes place in the 1860's just before the Civil War in 1861. However, the book focuses on the Grace and her family being slaves for Master Allen and the Missus. As well as all the steps they took to get to their freedom in the swamp. However, throughout the book they ongoing theme of regardless of race, we are all human is very significant. Especially in just the first couple chapters when Grace is talking about her story in her own point of view.
Townsend recruits Sophia as a spy. She is sent into a mansion as a housemaid. Mr. Townsend thought she would make a great spy because she can read and that did help Sophia gain information since her job was the clean John Andre’s office. He left letters about the war in his office and that is where Sophia got most of the information. She takes a long trip, on foot, up to continue her spying on John Andre.
The Two Princes of Calabar, written by Randy L. Sparks, is a book about two African American brothers who were kidnapped and sold in to slavery and written in much more detail than a regular history book. This is largely due to the fact that two brothers who were captured as slaves, named Ephraim and Ancona Robin John, documented a story that showed what is was really like to be a slave and to be handled as property during the eighteenth century. This book is written in the first person which gives it an extra edge in not only sharing information with the reader, but realistically portraying the emotions of the two slaves. The book goes into detail on how Africans used to capture other Africans and sell them for profit by detailing the journey of these two brothers.
In the poem, “Becoming and Going: An Oldsmobile Story” by Gerald Hill the speaker is traveling down a road in the Fort Qu’appelle Valley. He notices his father and his son are also driving down this road. The speaker then begins to list the two men’s characteristics. As he lists them we see that the father and the son have both similarities and differences in their personalities.
In her book, On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City, Alice Goffman provides a detailed account of the six years she spent living in and observing a poor, predominantly African American neighborhood in Philadelphia. This community, which she refers to as “6th Street,” directly experienced the immediate effects of mass incarceration in the United States. In the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda gives a really good example of character development throughout the story. Melinda just starts her freshman year at high school. Over the summer her and her friends went to a party and Melinda gets raped by a boy named Andy Evans and ends up calling the police, she didn't tell anyone why she called the police, causing her friends and everyone at the party to reject her. Melinda’s only friend is a new girl named heather. Melinda gets depressed and starts expressing her pain through stuff like biting her lips and her nails, and not talking.
I found the book Day of Tears by Julius Lester a very good read and I would certainly recommend the novel to others. This is a historical fiction book about the lives of slaves, and specifically, a major slave auction known as “The Weeping Time.” Lester wrote this book in dialogue of both the slaves and whites in the south. One of my favorite parts of this book was how the author included interlude sections to let readers know about certain characters later in their life.
In Chapter 12 of Readings for Sociology, Garth Massey included and piece titled “The Code of the Streets,” written by Elijah Anderson. Anderson describes both a subculture and a counterculture found in inner-city neighborhoods in America. Anderson discusses “decent families,” and “street families,” he differentiates the two in in doing so he describes the so called “Code of the Streets.” This code is an exemplifies, norms, deviance, socialization, and the ideas of subcultures and countercultures.

There are many actions steps I could take as social worker to try to address racism. According to the Cycle of Liberation Model by Bobbie Harro (2013), social change involves getting ready by gaining knowledge, reaching out to those with different and similar views and experiences, building community, and organizing. The first action step would be to get ready by educating myself more about racism and the different racial groups it affects. I would gain more knowledge of how racism is woven into our institution and perpetuated in our culture. For example, examining how the criminal justice system discriminates against minority groups by giving them longer sentences for similar crimes committed by the dominant group.

Literary essay In Life there are many problems. Gary Soto wrought stories called “ Raiders Jacket” and “ Broken Chains” that showed there are many problems in life. In “Broken chains” Alfonso needed a bike to take with him so he can go on a bike ride with Sandra. Also in “Raiders jacket” Lurena lost Eddie’s jacket, she liked Eddie.
Julia wasn’t much interested in reading, and Winston was surprised to discover that “the difference between truth and falsehood did not seem important to” (193) Julia. While Winston was greatly concerned about the party’s manipulation of truth, Julia was more interested in freedom of individuality. The clever thing was to break the rules and stay alive, whether it was a love affair, swearing, wearing makeup or obtaining luxuries on the black market. She took great pride in her ability to bring real sugar, real milk, and real coffee to her meetings with Winston (177). Julia’s desires to bring these prohibited items to their meetings, as well as her disinterest in exposing the part indicate that she rebels simply to undermine the party in her own small ways and gain individual freedom.
Slaves faced extreme brutality and Morrison focuses on rape and sexual assault as the most terrifying form of abuse. It is because of this abuse that Morrison’s characters are trapped in their pasts, unable to move on from the psychological damages that they have endured. “Morrison revises the conventional slave narrative by insisting on the primacy of sexual assault over other experiences of brutality” (Barnett 420). For telling Mrs. Garner what they had done, she was badly beaten by them, leaving a “chokecherry tree” (16) on her back. But that was not the overriding issue.
