Austin Barnhill George Orwell, 1984 Part 1 reading journal chapter 1-8 1. Summary: In this first part of the novel Orwell takes a focus on his world building. He uses the chapters to explain the way the society under Big Brother works and why the party is able to control people the way they do. On important aspect of these chapters is the theme of knowing one’s history, as our main character Winston works in records and has a job of altering historical documents to coincide with party wishes, but he himself wants to know the truth behind history as a way to prove the corruption of the party. Another important aspect of these chapters is Winston’s rebellion its affects on him as these rebellious acts reveal what Winston want more than anything free to understand and think his own thoughts. In the end Winston is struggling along looking for some truth in a world built on lies and the part ends with a foreboding that Winston’s rebellion may be the end of him. 2. …show more content…

Characters: Winston is the only character heavily focused on and developed. Winston himself is someone rather unremarkable being pretty thin and skin, and also not very intelligent compared to others. However, Winston is able to realize the inconsistencies and not fall prey to doublethink. Although Winston is the only character clearly stated and shown to want to rebel he is also extremely pessimistic and thinks that his desires will ultimately kill him. The woman with Dark hair is also mention a few times however, she has not had any lines or any development to say. A man by the name of O’brien who as stated by Winston may also be interested in rebellion because of the look he gives. Another character is a man named Syme who works on the countries language who as Winston explains is too intelligent to stay in the party
