In the 2021 edition of Sidecountry author John Branch recites stories from various lesser-known people about their sports, which prior to reading the book the reader didn’t know they’d enjoy. Telling these stories entices readers fascinated with sports by revealing lesser-known emotionally involved stories about interesting sports. Within these stories, the author's tone varies depending on the different occurring events. Through his use of ever-changing tones, emotional appeal, and inclusion of experts within the sport; John Branch captivates the attention of his readers. There are many stories throughout the writing but are all different therefore having different tones in each chapter. For example, in chapter eight “Where Creativity Wags Its Tail”. In this chapter he stated, “In the distance, the dags barked. Behind a shield of curtains, people huddled around the dogs standing still atop tables. The dogs were sprayed with bright colors (sometimes through a stencil), sculpted with gel, sprinkled with glitter and otherwise primped to Technicolor perfection.” (Branch). In this quote he is basically showing his fascination for this event as well as giving that type of tone by his specific word choice. By using things like “Technicolor perfection” as well as the title which includes the word creativity meaning that he is somewhat interested in this contest. However, Branch utilized many different tones, which can be seen in chapter thirteen, “The Ultimate Pursuit”, where Branch uses a more informative tone in order to inform the audience about the all the aspects of hunting. He included information about the animals, the terrain, and all the other side aspects that come along with hunting. Which consist of replenishing the herd of animals to prevent overhunting the animals and even the very limited special opportunities, permits and tags to hunt exclusively at certain times. By using this type of tone the author presented every aspect that goes into the sport to help the reader truly understand it. Overall, Branch uses his varying tones to better emphasize the story in which is being told and keeps the audience engaged and brimmed with
