The text that I am analyzing is “Checkers”, by Richard M. Nixon. In this text Richard Nixon attempts to clear his name and confront the people who questioned his honesty and integrity. At the time Senator Nixon was charged with having at his disposal a “supplementary expedition fund” of $18,000. This money was given to him from his supporters and a lot of people thought it was wrong for him to take it. As the running mate of Dwight Eisenhower the Republican National Committee was considering dropping Nixon from the ticket. Nixon started with an explanation for his finances including gifts and ended with attacking his political opponents by making accusations about their finances and challenging to give the same kind of explanation as he did. …show more content…

He wanted to let his audience know that the money he choose to take from his supporters was not going in his pocket for personal use. He choose to use the money for business related things that the government do not cover. He supported this argument by publicly announcing his personal financial business and other ways that he would be able to pay for these things, that isn’t possible for him.In this speech he says, “ I suggested to Governor Sherman Adams, who is the Chief of Staff of the Dwight Eisenhower campaign, that an independent audit and legal report be obtained, and I have that audit here in my hands”(15).
