He suffers from a more significant than normal addiction to gambling as well as minor substance abuse in the form of alcohol. Doug has multiple complementary negative behaviors that strengthen these target behaviors. He has a difficult time managing his money and doesn't get the normal amount of satisfaction from his life that most people do. This is caused by multiple lifestyle factors such as his work career, social status and family/interpersonal relationships. Repercussions of his behavior usually involve not having enough money and physical symptoms of overconsumption of alcohol. This drinking problem generally only pops up when his gambling endeavors do not work out for him. As he loses money, Doug cares less about being attentive to his drinking habits, and as he drinks more, he cares less about his spending habits. These habits bounce off of each other, making both worse than they are at base. The root cause for both of these behaviors is trauma from the death of a loved one. Thus, I intend to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trauma-Focused CBT for my intervention techniques. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: My CBT process will begin with informational sessions to help my client understand everything about himself and his target behaviors, as well as my plans and all general information on this therapy process. This process will take roughly 20 sessions of therapy, with meeting length varying by the phase of CBT. In the beginning stages of CBT I will start by trying to help my client identify his target behaviors as well as troubling issues in his life that could
