In the essay, “College Consumerism Run Amok” describes the views of Kevin Carey on how he views secondary education. Kevin Carey explains how the price of a college tuition have risen across the United States. His first point describes that students are asking for to many “creature comforts” and college oblige them causing tuition to skyrocket. Lastly, he points on that colleges are marketing themselves this way on purpose. Now colleges are marketing “creature comforts” instead of focusing on education. Therefore, his solution is to revert college back only students and professors. Although, I agree with Kevin Carey that colleges do not market their standards of education, However, I disagree with him that colleges no longer care about the quality of their education, Likewise, I disagree that colleges should revert to tiny buildings and a handful of professors and downgrade current faculties. …show more content…
They market facilities such as the high quality of dorm life, the number of dinning halls, and the recreational facilities. I agree with Kevin Carey when he states this is a poor way to judge a school. However, because this is how colleges are marketed this is how the public picks and chooses a college. It is becoming harder and harder at discerning what is ecenchal to a secondary education and what is fluff. Do I really need a gym at my college? Do I need three dinning hall on campus? Colleges choose these to be indicator of a quality college instead of teaching, scholarship, and academics. The reason for this it makes it harder of colleges to be compared to each other.
