Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s founding fathers and key contributing author of the 1776 Declaration of Independence, is responsibility for pinning the documents powerful and well known line, “all Men are created equal”. Moreover, the government no longer bears the full responsibility of maintaining the founding fathers ideals. Yet, it has taken steps to expand upon the equality of its people reguardless. Some ideals like equality have been achieved through everyone having accessibility to vote (in person or mail in ballot.) Equality as defined by the founding fathers had to do with the grounds of representation of each region in the major forms of government.
Modern society has represented a shift in societal upbringings and standards of equality when it comes to women and women’s rights. There is a set standard which is unequal to the rest of society as it represents a double standard that is mainly applicable to women and the power given to women. “Only this time the subject was women’s bodies, and this time the world had changed... Now it’s a means to further an agenda”(Friedman). This quote about the everchanging standards applied to women is always to further an agenda set by others that are not fully affected by them.
Equality is often seen as an immense privilege that most don't get to experience. After acquiring the most basic rights of equality, the question of true equality comes into place. Although the idea of it seems quite pleasant, and something to be achieved, this turns out to be false. Total equality is full of many troubles that consists of the manipulation of others, as shown in “Harrison Bergeron”, leads to the apparent decline in ambition, and minimizes the success of people in favor of appeasing feelings. Furthermore, the manipulation of others is required in order to achieve true.

According to the article “Created Equal”, Milton and Rose Friedman discusse three different ways that are considered to be equal. It includes equality before God, equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. They also believe that the “freedom preserves the opportunity for today’s disadvantaged to become tomorrow’s privileged in the process, enable almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life.” Finally, Friedmans conclude that a society that puts equality before freedom will get neither, and those that put freedom before equality will get a high degree of both. From my point of view, I do agree with Friedmans that equality of outcome is in clear conflict with liberty which government gets more power and getting bigger.

Patriarchal expectations do not hold back Patricia’s rebellious spirit. All throughout the memoir, Noah accentuates the turmoil woman experience because of patriarchal conventions, not just through Patricia, but though multiple other women in the memoir.
