Could you imagine being in a world under a robot invasion? In “Robots Will Destroy Our Jobs-And We’re Not Ready for It” by Dan Shewan and “Amazon’s Robots: Job Destroyers or Dance Partners?” by Angel Gonzalez, the presence of robots in the workplace are discussed. Engineers are making it possible for robots to perform some of the major tasks that would normally require human intelligence. Robots should not be looked at as interactive dance partners, they are assembled to take over jobs from humans. Shewan agitates on the need for humans to be “woke” on the looming danger of a robot operated world and how it would affect workers. While Gonzalez is not clear on his stand, he proposes that robots help on economic growth. Shewan manages to connect …show more content…
While this assumption is fair, he is very unsympathetic in his judgement, neglecting how this notion will put many individuals seeking for work or already having a stable job, at risk. In his eyes, “an effort to do away” with human resources or human hands means a healthy and modern economy. This displays his gullibility because the U.S is already dealing with unemployment, and although it’s not widespread, this new age of innovation can increase it. With unemployment, healthcare, and other necessities will not be accessible. However, Shewan forewarns about the risk of a robot approved workforce and uses statistic to show the pending effects of that; the global marketing firm IDC reports that “by 2019, 30% or more of the world’s leading companies will employ a chief robotics officer, and several governments around the world will have drafted or implemented specific legislation surrounding robots and safety, security and privacy” (Shewan 3). Shewan shows that the government is just as guilty as the manufacturers and won’t do much to provide another means of livelihood for those that will lose out on this change of economic focus. Furthermore, Shewan is a lot more believable and discusses the harsh reality of unemployment and lack of diversification in the tech field due to the deployment of robots in industries and business, which will resort …show more content…
“With millions of jobs at risk and a worldwide employment crisis looming, it is only logical that we should turn to education as a way to understand and prepare for the robotic workforce of tomorrow” (Shewan 4). This quotation is a warning to degree holders and undergraduates who aren’t into a STEM major. This is worrisome because there would be too many competitions in the science and technology field and companies already have a hard time hiring college graduates. However, even with the obvious growing number of physical robotics and artificial intelligence in America’s future workforce, the government is weak on educational funding for schools and colleges to have courses like computer science for those who are interested. There is a growing need for a STEM education, which goes beyond higher education. “President-elect Trump’s appointment of Betsy DeVos as a secretary of education is darkly pretentious. Trump seems confident that a billionaire with little apparent interest in public education is the perfect choice for such a crucial role. There is no doubt that this appointment will affect the opportunities of students keen to launch a career in stem” (Shewan 4). Whilst this shows Shewan’s political viewpoint, it also depicts the inconsiderateness of the present administration for electing a person who has little knowledge of what the education sector needs.
