The book Deaf Like Me by: Thomas S. Spradley & James P. Spradley is started in the summer of 1964, in Minnesota with Louise and Tom. Bruce their first son had contracted the German measles while Tom was teaching at Carleton College in Northfield. After finding out that Bruce had the German measles Louise beginning to worry if she was pregnant. They decide to go to the doctor to see if she was pregnant, because the German measles cause birth defects if contacted within the first three months of the pregnancy. To their surprise Louise is pregnant. The end up playing the waiting game to see if Louise would contract the German measles knowing that she was pregnant she ends up contacting it and looking into getting a abortion but no one would tell her where it was legal to get one. The doctors end up telling her not to worry that it would be rare for the baby to be born with a birth defect. They were just going to have to wait until the baby was born they end up finding out it was a girl. When Lynn was born they said she was perfectly healthy. They just couldn’t believe it they had her checked multiple times. They ended up leaving the hospital happy, but slowly all their worries rushed back when they begin to suspect that Lynn was deaf. They end up demining that she was to young determine if she was totally deaf they did know that she couldn’t hear everything. Later on as she gets older its confirmed that she is deaf. Then they begin the long journey of trying to get Lynn to speak so she could live life as normal as possible. Then end up going to as many meetings with other deaf parents who want their deaf kids to also be oral. They enter Lynn into a purely oral school for the deaf hoping that on top of their lessons at home the teachers would help them get Lynn to finally speak.
