For this assignment, I decided to read Dry by Augusten Burroughs. Augusten Burroughs, takes us on his journey as he describes his life and struggles as an alcoholic. Burroughs, divides his memoir into two parts. In the first part of his book, he explains how he goes from being one of the top advertisers in New York who later ends up in rehab. He also introduces his co-worker, friends and family and the relationship he has amongst them. As he does this, he mentions the importance of alcohol and its role that it plays in his daily life and interactions with these individuals. Recent events have forced her to report Augusten to their boss. This later on leads to Augusten being forced to either quit or go to rehab for thirty days. He decides to go to rehab due to fact that he will get fired and might not be able to get another job. Augusten also has two friends that he mentions in the throughout the book. Their names are Jim and Pighead. Jim works in a morgue and is also Augusten’s drinking buddy. Pighead, is a friend that Augusten goes to for advice who also happens to be HIV positive. Augusten describes Pighead as, “... my normal friend. Plus he’s older than I am, he’s thirty-two. So maybe I think of him as being wiser in some ways”(pg.24). As we get to know Pighead we get to realize that he is also the more rational friend when compared to Jim. For instance, when Augusten told Pighead that he was forced to go to rehab in order to keep his job, Pighead responded by saying “I’m glad you’re going into rehab. You’re a disaster” (pg.24). On the other hand, Jim jokes about the situation by saying “Think of all the celebrities you’ll see. Plus, it’s just great material” (pg.27).
