Summary of 'The Zoo Story ' Edward Albees 'The Zoo Story ' takes place in Central Park in New York City on a Sunday afternoon in summer, and had its first performance on September 28th 1959 in Berlin. The play is about the clash of two men – Peter, a man in his early forties who wears tweeds and horn-rimmed glasses, smokes a pipe and actually looks younger than he is, meets Jerry, a man in his late thirties, who is dressed carelessly and looks chubby – due to his world-weariness. Peter is reading a book an a bench in Central Park, like every sunny Sunday, as he is interrupted by Jerry with the sentence: 'I 've been at the zoo '. Although Peter is very repellent, Jerry starts asking him many questions about his family, his job and his life in general. Peter is confused why he has to answer that many questions, whilst Jerry wanted to start a conversation and doesn 't tell something from his life. So, Jerry starts to describe his life and his miserable apartment and tells Peter, without any emotions, about how his mother, father and aunt died to accidents and that he has nobody to spend time with. Peter feels sad for him, but Jerry goes on. He narrates 'The Story of Jerry and the Dog ', a story about his awful landlady, who 's trying to make a pass at him, and her enormous black dog, who 's attacking him since day one.
