You can’t be in the military until you are 18 years old but in the novel Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card there is a much different approach on that topic. This novel follows the life of Ender Wiggin. Ender has a special ability and is very advanced for his young age. Ender grew up being the 3rd child, which is not very normal for a family in this time period, and his brother bullies him for it. Ender is chosen by the government to join the military. They chose him because they plant chips into the back of everyone’s neck to gather information that they could use to get advanced people to join the army and fight the alien-like creatures that they call buggers. Most of the people they recruit are children. Throughout this novel, Ender faces many obstacles while he’s in the military and he can’t really live a normal life like a child should. Ender’s Game shows us how the government can take control of anything they want and they don’t factor how they could possible be ruining anything for example, the childhoods of the children they recruit. The only children they choose to come into the military are the very intelligent kids. In the beginning of the book, there were two unknown people talking about the intelligence of a brother and said intelligence, having nothing to do with him ability. As one of the people state, “‘ The brother tested out impossible. For other reasons. Nothing to do with his ability’” (Card 1). This quote, from the book, makes the reader question the ability of the brother and possibly what kind of test do people have to take and for what. Tis quote is also showing the use children or children being the future because we later learn that the two unknown people are talking about Ender and his family.
