Chapter 40
Charles and the prostitute are dropped off at her place, and they go into a room.
The woman calms her child down and gives Charles a drink. Then, she sits on his lap and they start to touch each other, but nausea hits Charles.
When Charles asks her name, she says “Sarah” and he immediately vomits on the bed.
Chapter 41
The prostitute, Sarah, takes care of him for the night. The next morning, she runs to get him a cab, and her baby starts to cry. Charles picks up the baby and calms it down with his watch. She comes back, and Charles leaves her 5 extra sovereigns.
Chapter 42
Once Charles gets home, Sam notices how drunk his boss is. He sleeps, and wakes up feeling ill from the hangover. He is though happy about not doing anything with Sarah.

Chapter 48
After leaving her hotel, he goes into a church, borrowing the church’s key to close it, and prays to wash his sins.
He looks at Christ, but can only see Sarah, and imagine life married with her, but he angrily prays again and leaves to give the key back.
Chapter 49
He returns back the key, and goes back to his hotel. He starts to write a letter to Sarah, confessing his love and promising to break off the engagement.
He gives the letter to Sam to send to the Endicott Family Hotel, to Sarah.
Sam comes back with no response from Sarah, and so, they leave back to Lyme, and there, Sam tells Mary everything that has been going on, and assures her with love.
Chapter 50
Charles comes to Ernestina, and confesses his unworthiness for her, and Ernestina thinks he is joking. He says how he loved her more for her wealth, and she begs him to wait a little longer to prover herself.
She also then asks if anything happened with someone else, and Charles confesses his relation with Sarah, without saying her name. Ernestina curses him, saying his name and his lover’s will be demolished, and faints, who Mary takes care
