A State of Imprisonment: An Analysis of Enclosures in Beauty and the Beast and Snow White Both Snow White and Beauty and the Beast are stories about a beautiful woman who is in some way imprisoned, and her journey to freedom. Snow White is imprisoned by the Wicked Queen; in some versions, she’s even made a slave. Beauty is imprisoned by the Beast, and also has some parallels to slavery as she is literally sold in some versions of the story. Because these are both stories about freedom and imprisonment, the authors of these stories often use enclosures such as walls, windows, and mirrors to tell us indirectly about the state of freedom of the protagonist. Both Beauty and Snow are trying to find freedom from their oppressors. The use of enclosures, particularly walls, windows, and mirrors serves as a metaphor for the state of freedom of the heroine. In the Grimm’s version she was only seven when her mother passed, her father remarried, and she was introduced to her new stepmother. Even in versions in which she is physically an adult, such as [KLDFIOASDHG] she is still mentally a child. This means she’s naive to the way the world works and may simply accept the situation because the abuse is coming from what is supposed to be her mother-figure. It’s also entirely possible for one to suffer from an abusive situation without being aware of it. That’s why in reality, full grown women often need to be convinced through family and friends intervention that they are in an abusive relationship. With Snow being a child, she is even more naive and vulnerable and it’s not until several years after the events have passed (which she spend living in the dwarfs cottage) that she realizes how horrible her situation
