In “English Only” Warren J. Blumenfeld considers the troubles of establishing the English only laws, he also visits the fact that although America hasn’t established an official language, there is still an implied code of language throughout the country. He argues that the need to establish English as our official language is unnecessary and demeaning to those who don’t speak English, he also argues that we should stop the discrimination by language and accept our diversity as a country. He shows that some states have already passes the English only law, then sympathizes with those immigrants who don’t know English, saying that these “laws fall under linguicism” (Blumenfeld). He assumes that these laws will mostly bring on difficulties to many people but he chooses to ignore all the benefits it can bring us, despite the fact that the life some of his readers would be easier from having these laws constitutionalized, he continues to back only the ones who would suffer from the laws. The group of people on favor for the laws would view his argument as intense and one sided as he isn’t seeing the situation from another perspective. He provides great detail of why English shouldn’t be the official language but he fails to address the fact that if it were to be our official language it would be beneficial to the country. For example, he went on about how we should maintain our diversity, but in the contrary having an official language can provide more unity within ourselves. It would make us more united and more connected as a country. It will also allow us to have better communication and understanding with each other, no matter what culture. I think he also should’ve emphasized on the fact that it will promote better relationships and will abolish the segregation within cultures.
