The term, biology, comes from the Greek words “bios” and “logos”. The Greek word, “bios” means life, while “logos” means study. In essence, the term biology may be used in reference when talking about the science of living and living organisms. Life structures, function, evolution, growth distribution and taxonomy are terms associated with biology. Biology today has a wide range of various branches and disciplines. Biologists are able to communicate with other scientists through written reports or, “scientific papers”. The understanding of the many branches and disciplines of biology heavily rely on these “scientific papers”. Knowing how to effectively write and comprehend scientific papers are both major components of being scientifically …show more content…
According to the Biology Department at Lewis and Clark, the most basic sections a scientific paper include: the title and author, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, literature cited, tables, figures, and equations. Including these sections ensure precise, and unambiguous communication. The title section of a report consists of a name for your report and a list of authors. The title should be concise and descriptive. The title allows the reader to know what they are examining without wasting much time reading through the whole report. The introduction of a report states the purpose, and includes hypotheses addressing why the topic is interesting. Writing a good introduction allows the reader to think about the origin of the study and if the topic is worth reviewing. An introduction should also allow the reader to easily implement …show more content…
Including results in your report should mean you have included a summary of what was recorded during the study. This section describes the assorted data gathered during the study. The success of a results section depends heavily upon the organization of the data gathered. Results should effectively communicate their meaning and value. After stating the results, the author should interpret their results in a discussion section. This section may be the most significant section of a scientific report. The author must implement a great deal of thought in order to write a discussion section. A clear comprehension of the biological principles behind a study should be present within this section. It’s a good idea for an author to examine other sources of information, such as lectures or other readings, in order to provide a context for interpreting the results. A well-written discussion determines the study’s quality and effectiveness. The discussion shows the reader whether or not the observations and experiments were actually contemplated upon by the author. The next two sections, acknowledgements and cited literature exhibits any help the author received from outside sources. Since a scientific report is a work of literature, these two sections ensure credibility. Lastly, any impressive scientific paper should include
