Report on Evan Mills, SONAR Guest Lecture Evan Mills is an inspiring Senior Scientist who works at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. Mr. Mills recently gave two brilliant lectures called “a big tour through the world of energy” and “a drill down into energy efficiency”. The students of SONAR and eLab were given this once in a lifetime opportunity to hear this scientist’s point of view on January 26 and February 2. Evan Mills began by explaining why we should care about energy. Mr. Mills engrossed the audience throughout the lecture by discussing his main points about climate change, air pollution, energy poverty, and energy efficiency. Mills showed constructive, visual examples and pertinent information about climate change and air pollution. He stated that 2015 was the hottest year ever recorded in history. Mr. Mills presented two graphs and described how the Earth would be if people began to use more efficient sources of energy and stopped deforestation. Meanwhile, the other graphed presented what would happen if we continued deforestation and used the energy sources that we use today. The 2nd graph did not look like a bright future. If the greenhouse gases, temperature, sea level, and CO2 emissions continued to increase, the temperature would cause many more problematic occurrences. Furthermore, he discussed how the air pollution in China has resulted in a shocking number of 1.6 million deaths per year. How is China responding to this? They are making an effort to increase the percentage of renewable energies in their
