Yousef Komunyakaa’s poem “Facing it” used descriptive imagery for the audience to see his struggle as a veteran back from the Vietnam War. The alliteration of the letter F and I were used throughout the poem to add a hushed and peaceful tone to the concept of war after the fact. “Late to church” was meant to represent an internal war about religion. Growing up with extremely religious parents, I always felt disconnected from them because I don't believe in God as much as they do. The poem starts setting a scene in a car implied to be running in a parking lot. The song reminds me of a road trip my family took to New York and as stated before, being in a car is when I am most serene. I don't like coffee but I love the ambiance just a mention of the word gives. The audience can picture a whole scene just from the word and listening to the song transports me to another place. I then mention rain falling and while I love the rain, I mainly love it from my room curled up with candlelight and a good book. The rain gave me a reason to head home and while it did fall fast I used the f sound to show how I was still relaxed in the car.
