When picking up the the book, “Fargo Rock City”, one might just asume that it is about farm life just by looking at the cover. The cover has a picture of a cow on it and one would not think that it has any relation to heavy metal music. But, as the saying goes, never judge a book by its cover, because that is what this book is about. “Fargo Rock City” is exactly about heavy metal music. The book is written by Chuck Klosterman who grew up in rural North Dakota. He writes about his past history and how he grew up liking heavy metal music and his experinces through his childhood to adulthood. When writing he not only just talks about the heavy metal music experince, but how it shaped him and his friends and the how the culture and society adapted to heavy metal music. This concerning parents made them not want their children listening to heavy metal music and would also sue some of the bands for the death of their children. This according to Klosterman was absurd because and I quote, "And one would assume that any kid so obsessed with a record that he's going to fucking kill himself over it would take the time to listen to the lyrics (or at least read the liner notes!)" (Klosterman p. 47). This part in the book really aggravated Klosterman, because music and the bands never go out and say kill yourselves. Some of the song titles may be questionable, like "Suicide Solution," by Ozzy Osborne, but in the songs they never say to kill themselves for the music. He believed that any kind of heavy music lover would know and understand the songs unlike the other fan based posers, "the kind of kids who truly love heavy metal evidently suck at artistic interpretation" (Klosterman, p.47).
