No one ever thought that hunting could go so wrong. The short story “Hunters In The Snow” by Tobias Wolff really makes the reader think and wonder whats going to happen next, as three men wonder into the woods on a cold snowy day for a hunting trip. The author uses the setting and conflict to portray the characters and how they act in the story. The three man Kenny, Frank and Tubs are pretty close to friends, but that does stop Kenny from teasing Tubs the whole trip, Kenny nearly runs him over when he's picking him up. Tubs had to drive out of the way, Kenny laughing up a storm states that he looked like a “Beachball with a hat on”.

The theme of unrequited love and the fascination yet dislike for the wealthy. The main example of this in Scott’s work is between the character of Jay Gatsby, from The Great Gatsby, and Dexter Green, from Winter Dreams. Jay Gatsby shares more than several common personality traits with Dexter Green.
Characters in novels can have obsessions with people, the same as in the world readers live in today. In the book, The Great Gatsby, the main, male character, Gatsby, is obsessed with a woman named Daisy Buchanan. In the passage Winter Dreams, Dexter, the main male character, is obsessed with a woman, Judy Jones. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote both of these novels/ passages introducing the same theme. The Great Gatsby is a story about a man who has revolved part of his life around trying to achieve his American dream by conforming to a woman and society 's standards.
In one example of imagery, Fitzgerald explains that Dexter uses the winter to dream about playing golf with upper class people and eventually beating them. F. Scott Fitzgerald in the short story “Winter Dreams” uses the characters Judy and Dexter to illustrate the time passing and life moving on. At the beginning of the short story Dexter is shown as a little kid of about the age of fourteen.

“The Ice Storm” is about two (the Hoods and the Carvers) ordinary upper-middle class fami-lies in the 1970’s specified 1973. The Hoods are Ben, Elena, Paul and Wendy and the Carvers are Jim, Janey, Mikey, and Sandy. The two families act as a safe, typical family, only their lives fall apart and end up in pandemonium. “The Ice Strom” deals with themes as the parents and the children are occupied with such as adultery, alcoholism, drugs (pot), and sexual experi-mentation between children.

The man character, Dexter, is born to a middle class grocery shop owner and works as a caddy during his childhood.
By the end of the story he cannot have the girl, and his dreams are ruined. The author illustrates Dexter Green as a wishful boy longing for what the future holds. Fitzgerald incorporates many symbols as one being solely Judy Jones. The author uses style in the story by separating the story into 6 sections. Fitzgerald in “Winter Dreams” depicts the fantasy of the American dream and how no matter how hard one works he may never achieve his dream.

Scott Fitzgerald utilizes diction, juxtaposition, defeated language, and symbolism to inform his readers that though many yearn for the benefits that the American dreams supposedly brings, the idealization of it is unrealistic.
