In the textbook “From Indians To Chicanos”, the author’s, James Diego Vigil, purpose for writing this book is to educate about the history of Chicanos, their experiences, and what changed their lifestyle. James Diego Vigil’s objective for this book is to write about the Chicano culture and how it has changed for ethnic minority groups due to time and different geographical and socioeconomic settings. He also addresses how the Chicano experience motivated Chicanos to dedicate themselves to shape their own identity and refuse to accept outside ideas and theories about them, about their identities.

The second stage “Spanish Colonial Era,” includes three hundred years of rule, unequal classes, culture and race discrimination that result in the peasant class. Stage three is “ Mexican Independence and Nationalism,” which starts with social groups, to resist or carry out social changes and an independent Mexico trying to become a nation and the Mexican American war. Stage four “Anglo-American and Mexicanization Period,” studies the growth of the Mexican-American people, the effects of immigration in the twentieth century, the 1960’s Chicano movement and its importance today. Professor Fraga presented canned green beans, canned yellow beans, canned red beans, canned black beans, canned white beans, and canned brown beans. The professor began by explaining that a person didn’t like how the canned green beans looked, (prejudice), and then said canned green beans are nasty, (Stereotype), so then that person avoided, (social result), eating those canned green beans. Professor Fraga then presented the idea that people preferred canned black beans, canned red beans, canned brown beans, canned yellow beans, and canned white beans to canned green beans, (discrimination). Which leads to people creating a law, (“legal”) that does not permit restaurants to serve canned green beans, (disadvantaged). The professor then explained how segregation leads to legal actions and then canned green beans are isolated.
