In this analysis I will be breaking down some key points that George Washington made in his farewell address. There are many major points in his speech such as retirement and the safety or our union. However, some of the most important ones are his comments on political parties and foreign policy.
George Washington is considered one of the most iconic individuals in American history not only because he was the first president. George Washington was also a general during the American revolution and one of the founding fathers. However, during his second term as president Washington began to write his famous farewell address. The farewell address was directed towards friends and citizens. The article was published on September 19th, 1796. Washington’s Farewell address opens by Washington expressing his feelings to the people and reasons as to why he is leaving office. Washington had served two terms in office with retirement on his mind. The people wanted Washington to run for a third term, but he could not handle the public life while in office. No other president has run for three terms accept Franklin D. Roosevelt. If Washington ran he would have been the first president in history to serve three terms. These political barriers can lead to division within the union and will cause chaos between the north and south. President Washington believed in a neutral aspect when dealing with political parties.
