Washington has widely been hailed as the “Father of his Country” and that epithet is well-earned, his leadership from the beginning of his military career to the end of his presidency fostered and safeguarded the transformation of the United Colonies into the United States. George Washington was born on Februrary 22, 1732 in his family's estate near present-day Colonial Beach in Westmoreland county, Virginia. The Washingtons we're Virginia gentry of middling rank and moderately wealthy, George's father Augustine was a slave-owning tobacco planter whom made numerous ventures in iron mines. After the deaths of his father and older half-brother, George became heir to the Washington estate and personally acquainted with the largest landholder in Virginia, William Fairfax. The Washington family inheritance afforded George a luxurious lifestyle and important connections that would launch his prestigious career as a surveyor and soldier. At the age of 17, Washington received his first military appointment as a major in the Virginia provincial militia. Due to territorial disputes
