Authors utilize syntax and style to create the individuality of his or her purpose of writing; different elements of the style of individual authors can often times slightly alter the full purpose of the essay. For example, Joan Didion’s “Goodbye To All That” and Dave Barry’s “Dating Made Easy” both obtain similar purpose: to reveal the naive spirit of youth and to caution individuals from falling into foolish, ignorant actions in the carefree, surrealistic environment of youthhood. In comparison, Didion’s form of periodic sentence structure highlights her wisdom and experience of age, which highlights the regrets of foolish actions created during youthhood, and the significance of youth action on the remainder of individuals’ lives. Moreover, the use of figurative language between the two authors continues to expand and separate their individual purposes: Barry often uses visual imageries and numerous metaphors to display the environment and situation of his characters, which emphasizes the relationship between the audience and the characters within the story, thus continues to build on the relatability of Barry’s narration.
