This book attempts to grasp beneath the many images and representatives of Franklin that have happened over the past two hundred years and recover Franklin who would become a symbolic American Founding Father. Franklin was not even destined to be an American, but this book is about how he became one. Gordan S Wood was a fellow at the institute for United States studies in London in 2002. This book was printed by the penguin press in 2004. He is now an author and professor. The authors viewpoint is he knows all about Franklins life and he also has read Franklins papers from when he was alive. His purpose for writing this book was to show how much more Franklin actually did than what we only know of him creating a lightning rod. He would have most likely loved to stay in France. Franklin had a lot of enemies in America and most of his friends were dying off so Franklin had really no one to turn to, this almost kept him from coming back to America. When Franklin returned home to America he was welcomed better than he expected and he knew America was the right country for him to stay in. He was offered the head of the common wealth when he returned. At seventy-nine years of age this is how he became an American. The author’s evidence is very played out and it is a little unnecessary. Wood tells us about how he became and gentlemen, a British imperialist, a patriot, a diplomat, and an American. In all these chapters he gives you evidence on how he became these things but Wood also tells you things not everybody would be into. People get bored when someone goes on and on about one topic and lose interest. How Wood deals with the counter evidence is good though because he knows all about it so you semi understand what Wood is talking
