Earth is Cruel In an ever changing and evolving world, humanity has always faced the forces of nature. Human civilization has started from the ground up many centuries ago, yet nature has many methods to break down what we build. To be human is to be mortal. To be mortal is to stand in the face of Gods and Nature, and rebuild again and again. A renowned writer, Leonard Pitts questions what a country such as Haiti can do in the constant destruction it faces due to natural causes. In truth, there is no easy answer or explanation for what the Haitians should do. Leonard Pitts acknowledges that we cannot control nature. However, he does raise an interesting question, "what if it's always your turn?". Haiti always gets the short end of the stick, no question about that. In his story, Pitts questions what the world can do in order to alleviate some of the terrible trauma that Haitians undergo. There is no force on earth that humanity has control over when it comes to acts of God and Nature. As humans, it is not anywhere within our realm of power to control nature. In that sense, sometimes the world simply is just cruel. However, the one thing humans can control is how we respond to such cruelty. Despite the endless trials and tribulations that the Haitians face again and again, they never cease to rebuild and carry on with their lives as if nothing happened. Despite losing over 100,000 lives in various earthquakes and tropical storms, Haiti continues to memorialize the dead, rebuild, and carry on once more. Tropical Storm Gordon killed hundreds, Hurricane Georges took several hundred more,Tropical Storm Jeanne claimed several thousand.
