“Hero’s return” by Kristen Hunter is about a young boy, named Jody, who goes through a transition with the help of his older brother Junior. Junior has been in the “house” for eighteen months, and is now finally out. Jody impatient to see his brother later on notices that his brother has changed. Junior wanting to help his younger brother change, and not do the same mistakes as him, makes him live 4 days of jail. This short story is directed mostly towards teens but can also be read by adults. Teens can compare to Jody going through a transition. A child would first not grasp the meaning, and not understand it at all. We see this in the end, before last paragraph, when it is written “...but I felt stronger and older than Leroy and the others. I knew they still had to learn...” So here we see that he matured and understands things that younger people don’t. We also see this in the very end, it is written “Then I left them and went on my way, knowing where I was going and walking like a man” These few sentences explains the change Jody went through. Jody’s mom kept calling him “My baby,” yes he is the “baby” of the family, but at one point everyone has to leave the “baby and kid” phase, and go through the teen and adult
