Steve Greenberg feels that Alabama shouldn’t be in the playoffs with what the other teams had done. Steve Greenberg purpose of writing this article was to show his reasoning that the Buckeyes should be in the playoffs instead of Crismon Tide. Steve Greenberg intended audience was the SEC and the people who watch college football and likes the Buckeyes.
Daisy Bates, the author of "The Long Shadow of Little Rock", is a civil rights activist, newspaper writer and an officer in the NAACP. In the book, "The Long Shadow of Little Rock", she writes about the hate, anger and segregation of blacks in Arkansas. The book is presented more as an autobiography of the author herself, although the story of the integration of nine black students in the Little Rock Central High School in 1957 takes spotlight in the book. Bates mentions about the hardship of her and the nine other students in the effort to defy local segregation and bring integration in the school, as well as in the whole of the US. The author has been able to provide the facts of what racial prejudice was back then in the
Daisy Bates was the author of a memoir titled The Long Shadow of Little Rock 1962. Bates discusses the trials and tribulations she faced throughout her childhood and into adulthood. Daisy Bates helped nine African American students, known as the Little Rock Nine to desegregate Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas in the fall of 1957. She published a weekly African American newspaper, the Arkansas State Press. Bates also became the president of the Arkansas chapter of the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a short story that is realistic fiction about a boy named Michael, who lives with his Aunt Esther after the death of his parents. In the beginning, Michael and Aunt Esther fight with one another. Soon, Michael brought home a hermit crab named Sluggo. Michael and Aunt Esther start to make a good effort to fix their broken relationship with one another mainly over the crabs. In the end, Aunt Esther and Michael now have a good bond and apologized for fighting with one another.
In the book, “Crabs Dig Holes According to Size of Their Shells” by James McPherson He talks about his ‘shell” which is his room, and crabs which is himself. The story is mostly about him being alone and him seeming like he is sad about something in life, which brings me to my thought of what his message is. My thought of his message is McPherson’s message is that at one point in life you are going to hit a low in life then develop a shell you want to hide in. My first quote is “Something was denying me peace because I was denying it from range and meaning” To paraphrase the quote the keywords are deny,peace and something. In the quote the word deny means that he is denying his own peace by something in life.
Consider the lobster is full of catching imagery and description, however these two instances of imagery are the ones that especially caught my eye. “ Camden, with its old money and yatchy harbor and five star restaurants and phenomenal B&B’s, and Rockland, a serious old fishing town that hosts the festival every summer in historic Harbor Park, right along the water.” This completely describes the atmosphere of Camden along with the towns character. Old, quaint, luxurious, these are words that pop into my mind as the author describes Camden.
It said that a lobster’s nervous system is quite simple and it is ill-equipped to feel pain; however, Wallace explains that the claim is “incorrect in about nine different ways”(pg60). He convinces the reader by first of all displaying the information in an easy to read and unbiased way. Wallace then explains the anatomy of a lobster and shows the reader that lobsters have a centralized nervous system. Then, he uses a mixture of logical and pathetic appeal to demonstrate that lobster’s can sense the scorching hot water, by saying “Lobsters have pain receptors sensitive to potentially damaging extremes of temperature,”(pg63). While saying that, he reports the “struggling, thrashing, and lid-clattering” which occurs when the lobsters’ are in a boiling kettle, Wallace asserts that due to the lobsters’ behavior and neurological build-up show that a lobster can perceive pain, by saying that a lobster’s action show a preference to not get boiled alive, and this preference leads to the lobster suffering.
The article “Consider the Lobster” by David Wallace opens a vivid, gruesome window, to a harsh truth that all lobster consumers push far back into the recesses of their minds. Wallace implores us to visit the controversial issue of boiling a live creature to death, for the sole purpose of our consumption. He uses a variety of literary persuasive tactics including the three rhetorical appeals Logos, Pathos and Ethos to drive home his argument to the reader. Throughout the article Wallace puts the reader on the front lines of a three-front war of convincing ethical, emotional and logical appeals.
Rhetorical Analysis Essay: Consider the Lobster The lobster is a disgustingly beautiful creature, known for its delicate taste, menacing shell and controversy. In his essay, “Consider the Lobster”, David Foster Wallace describes the events and festivities of the Maine Lobster Festival and the history of the lobster to deliver a poignant message about the moral implications of killing and eating animals. Wallace is able to develop his position and vividly capture the audience’s attention through a strong use of humor, deliberate tonal shifts and a unique structure. David Foster Wallace, and “Consider the Lobster” in particular, are known for their footnotes- and for good reason.
Likewise, he demonstrates his discomfort about society’s acceptance of lobster’s pain and dismissal of their essence. However, in order to understand Wallace’s real intention in the essay, it is necessary to know his perspective towards modern society. By reading the Incarnation of Burned Children, it is possible to relate the society issues displayed, with considering the Lobster issues. The inability of lobsters, or the child, to communicate their pain of our careless acts is what disturbs Wallace. Therefore, he displays different examples to persuade the readers that society’s morality is corrupted and that the whole industry of boiling lobsters alive is accepted under a false premise that some animals are not deserving of protection, or are not ‘highly developed’ to feel pain.

The novel, The Old Man and the Sea, is a story about an old man, Santiago, who experienced great adversity but did not give up. The author, Ernest Hemingway, describes how an old man uses his experience, his endurance and his hopefulness to catch a huge marlin, the biggest fish he has ever caught in his life. The old man experienced social-emotional, physical, and mental adversity. However, despite the overwhelming challenges, he did not allow them to hold him back but instead continued to pursue his goal of catching a fish with determination. Santiago’s character, his actions and the event in the novel reveals an underlying theme that even when one is facing incredible struggles, one should persevere.
