Kandice Sumner’s attention getter was a surprise statement that made the audience laugh and from that moment on she manages to captivate the audience. Sumner talks about the quality of education of kids in low income neighborhoods in comparison to the education of kids in wealthy neighborhoods. Schools in poor neighborhoods lack resources that are standard in schools in wealthy neighborhoods. Schools are desegregated, but they seem to be more segregated than ever, because of the lack of resources and the quality of education.

At the age of five she had to ride the bus for an hour to school. When Kandice Sumner realized that the kids in her neighborhood were not receiving the same education and resources that she was receiving, she felt guilty for having the privilege of a good education at a suburban school, while other kids in her neighborhood received a low - quality education at the local school. …show more content…

Due to the lack of resources she does not have the tools to give her students the same quality of education that she received. New books, soccer fields, musical instruments, and healthy school lunches are resources that do not exist in their school system.

Sumner talks about her students and an organization called Donors Choose that supply teachers with resources of their choice. Donors Choice supplied new books for Sumner’s class. Her students were excited about the new books and they read more.
