The short stories, ‘The Things They Carried’ and ‘How to Tell a True War Story’ by Tim O’Brien are stories about the Vietnam War. ‘The Things They Carried’ concerns a platoon of soldiers while in Vietnam. ‘How to Tell a True War Story’ is an imaginary portrayal of one of the storyteller’s encounters in the Vietnam War. The stories advise the reader that it is important for the stomach to believe in the truth of the story. This calls for careful analysis of why reader has to come away with visceral writing to understand the stories. These things are all items that make life in Vietnam more tolerable. The initial list entails chewing gum, cigars, lighters and wearables. It is a very non-emotional list, and it appears to bring down the emotive level of the storyteller. O’Brien provides advice to the readers that they ought to be cynical and gives a narrative told to him by Mitchell as a case. A guard goes into the jungle for the weeklong maneuver to assess the nemesis activities. The forest is scary, and the men begin hearing bizarre, eerie sounds which become an allegory, a pleasure club, chanting and other strange noises yet the singings they hear are not human. Sanders argues that the jungle, rocks, and trees were generating the noise. O’Brien himself is the principal character-he is Vietnam veteran remembering his encounters during the war, as well as an author who is assessing the techniques behind authoring narratives. Through writing about his encounters in Vietnam, the author’s character is able to find a medium in which he can sort through his emotions, since “by narrating stories, one can objectify individual experience. One can separate it from self. An individual can pin down particular truths”(158). The author does not look upon his narratives as therapy-he narrates his tales since they are part of his history and he is now a direct outcome of them.
