Hunger Essay The book Hunger by Lan Samantha Chang, is a collection of stories revolving around the topics of immigration, family, cultural conflicts, and identity. From one story to another, it tells the lives of immigrant families in a foreign country. In this story, the author illustrates the theme that the experience of immigrant families is very hard and tough as they attempt to combat cultural conflicts in a new country. He stood, bewildered, and walked out.” (Chang 180) Throughout this excerpt of Unforgetting, it talks about Charles leaving for college and he also wants to leave his parents. It is normal for American culture to leave your parents. Traditionally, Chinese families, want to keep their kids as close to them as possible. So with this sudden leaving of Charles, conflicts with Chinese culture and heritage. As cultural conflicts arise in this family, it emphasizes the struggles of cultural conflicts in immigrant families. In conclusion, Lan Samantha Chang illustrates the theme of immigrant families facing hardship and suffering as they attempt to tackle the cultural conflicts in a foreign country. As Tian turns down the invitation to drink with his coworkers, it illustrates the cultural differences that can make someone not fit in. Emily’s transition of cultures shows how the cultural divide that appears between the 2 sides of a family can make a family separate. Lastly, Charles’s need to leave his family to pursue college shows his self-desperation to see the outside world at the cost of his
