In “I Just Wanna Be Average,” Mike Rose explains the experience being part of a school system that had no prior knowledge to have educators to teach students. Rose supports his claims by describing the different situations he had to encounter with the lack of the school system, the hopelessness of the teachers and his peers, that lead those students with no support to lead them in a direction of success. Rose purpose is to point out that; all that it was needed was a teacher that cared enough to teach and to influence those students to succeed and to never hinder the student’s learning experience because anything is possible with an little of an encouragement. Public school is one of the primary sources of education for many children in the United States, therefore it should be the school 's sole purpose to teach them the essential elements they need to succeed in life. This means more than teaching math, science, history, and English. A school, primarily high school, must provide courses that focus on a student 's future career plans, courses that challenge a student academically, and courses that help a student navigate their life as adults. Without classes that help students expand and delve into their future career choices, they can limit their views of success. An excellent example of this can be found in Jonathan Kozol 's Still Separate, Still Unequal, particularly in his interviews with the students of Fremont High School in Los Angeles.
But, his mindset of the previous class also followed him there too. As he continues to struggle in the college prep class, he then adapt to the new pace and the work load, but the same learning methods for a college prep class. Eventually, he found his way into his life and tap into his true potential. In his English class, he met a teacher name, Mr. MacFarland, he is one of the good teachers that really changed Rose's perspective on school. Eventually they became close.
In the story “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris. He writes about a personal experience in where he was attending a French class and was mistreated by the teacher. Sedaris explains how the teacher would make fun of the students and the mistakes they would make. Through the story Sedaris, paints a picture of how he felt whenever his teacher would insult every student’s introduction to the class without making a fool of ourselves. He wanted the audience to know that when someone tries to bring you down you do not let yourself and being yourself back up.

In this essay Rose describes that students who have teachers who are unprepared, or incompetent majorly contribute to student failure. He is trying to show that many children have potential that is overlooked or sometimes even ignored, by authority.
What this essay is saying about students and education is there is no student who doesn’t want to learn or what’s to get an education. Everybody is capable of learning, but the problem is sometimes the education are given by people who don’t care if you are learning or not. In this essay, we learned that the author was put in classes where the teachers didn’t care too much about their students and because of this he become a mediocre student. Not because he didn’t like school or he was lazy, but because there was no inspiration in learning. Luckily, Mike Rose the author of I Just Wanna Be Average found someone that wants him to start learning someone that make him change his mind.
Success is not granted by just hoping for it. To achieve true success, you need the strength of mind and body to compete and work hard to reach your entire potential. Brent Staples argues “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A’s,” in the past few years their has been a high increase to colleges becoming lenient in regard to their grade policies. This softhearted act has led to an rise in the quantity of A’s that are dispersed each semester. Professors who do not give out high grade could potentially affect his/her’s salary from receiving disapproving student evaluations, “The most vulnerable teachers are the part-timers who have no job security and who now teach more than half of all college course.”
Lives on the Boundaries by Mike Rose is an inspirational text. Throughout the text Rose is battling with loss and depression, but continues to strive to satisfy his educators. Mike Rose wasn’t the type of student who would go above and beyond to prove himself unless he had some push from his professors. Luckily he received this push throughout his entire educational career. Once an individual receives the invitation it provides a window of opportunity, a support system with the educators, and allows the student to see their potential in the pursuit of greater education.
In Carl Singleton’s article, “What Our Education System Needs is More F’s,” he argues that students aren’t receiving the failing grades they deserve. School systems are to blame for the lack of quality in America’s education. No other recommendation for improvement will succeed. The only way to fix the American education system is to fail more students. According to Singleton, the real root of the issue is with the parents.
A recent study released by Pearson that questioned over 400,000 students in grades 6-12 shows that only “48% of students think their teachers care about them…and only 45% of students think teachers care if they are absent from school” (Hare, 2015). This shocking statistic demonstrates what American students think about their teachers. Most students are under the impression that their teachers don’t care about them. When teachers don’t care about their students and allow them to fail, many students with unrealized potential give up on education. Mike Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average” describes his journey through high school on the vocational track after the results of his “tests got confused with those of another student named Rose” (Rose, 1989, p. 2).
Mike Rose shares his personal story to the public in “I just wanna be average”, as he reveals the many flaws within the educational system of a high school in an economically depressed neighborhood in Los Angeles. He effectively directs his arguments towards both educators and parents by utilizing emotional and logical appeals. By convincing the audience to fear that children placed on remedial tracks are being hindered rather than assisted, the author causes both awareness and a feeling of duty to change the way we handle teaching children. Rose presents his argument by aiding the reader through the eyes of his younger self as he retells the story of his years in high school.
Being Average-Synthesis Essay Have you ever felt like you’re not good enough or smart and people tell you to quit because you will never succeed? Well I have experienced this in many ways. For me, I take this as a motivation to become the best person I can be. To show the people who said that I will not succeed in things, that I will and that I will succeed ten times harder than someone else would, just to prove a point.
Imagine going to school just for the heck of it , going to school just to meet up with friends and have fun. People happen to think that schools are just showing off and not really teaching because school are basically competing with eachother to see who ever is the best school. On my perspective we are not learning anything benefical because will we carry everything we learned throughout our entire lives? What happens if we are in college and didn 't need everythings.
The definition of failure is the lack of success. I have experienced failure a large number of times in my life as a student, an athlete, and as a daughter. I’m not saying that I haven’t experienced success before, because that’s just not what I am trying to say. My failures are what stick with me more than my successes, because they have lessons that are teaching me the rights and the wrongs. My success’ are important to me but it’s harder for me to remember those who don’t teach me something like my failures do.
Education is a huge issue that not only affects kids and their parents, but their community as well. Schools teach young kids to become the next generation of engineers, technicians, and political leaders, working towards creating a better future for their country and their community. Teachers have the unique job of creating the future leaders of the world, and preparing them for both college and life beyond, by putting a special push towards math and science, the so-called “foundation” of our society. The hard truth is, no one can be anything they want to be. Some people are simply not cut out to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists.
