Many people have learned about the Holocaust throughout the years, but learning about it from a primary source is a whole different experience. A scary journey that turned out to be the Holocaust has been told by two individuals that survived. These two stories tell the reader what life was like and what they went through. Even though the conditions were terrible, both Eli and Lina were able to survive and break away through fear, horrendous experiences, and hope that lead them to surviving and leaving people they cared about behind.
In the book Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, I was appalled by the inhumane conditions of the boxcar. I felt that the best way to truly signify the conditions that the victims faced in the boxcars was to create a drawing of both the exterior and the interior of a boxcar, then provide statistics to demonstrate the minimal amount of space that each person had. The purpose of the exterior view is to demonstrate what the boxcar would look like to a bystander, and the recurring trickery which the Soviets use to hide the truth from outsiders. The text “Воры и Проституток,” which means “Thieves and Prostitutes,” is printed on the side of the boxcar, so that those who happen to see the people inside, have no suspicions as to the true intentions
In the story “Blue against White” by Jeannette Armstrong, the author is able to convey that over time, throughout the many cherishing moments, each moment serves as a step towards the pathway to acceptance within yourself. Furthermore, each step taken is a moment to reflect and deepen your connection to your true self. Although embracing acceptance is a door wide open to enter, the pathway towards it is the overwhelming challenge. In Between Shades of Gray, Lina Valkas has a very strong perspective on what’s happening to her world around her as the Soviets invaded her home country, Lithuania. Lina feels a strong sense of unjust, worry, and depression as she’s taken across the country and to the North Pole throughout the story. Lina was groped, starved, beaten, teased, humiliated and used by the NKVD officers during her imprisonment. Cans and trash were thrown at her, she was burned by cigarettes, and she was exposed to deadly illnesses and hard labor. As this happens to her, she grows increasingly more depressed, weak, worried for her family and shameful due to her assault.
