In this chapter, Truman Capote introduces several different characters. He introduces Herb Clutter, father of the Clutter family. Herb is married to Bonnie, and they have four children, the two youngest still living at home with their parents. Herb started a small farm and would slowly make his way up, making the Clutter family wealthy. His wife, Bonnie Clutter suffers from depression and other mental illnesses, so she at home for a majority of the time. Their youngest daughter, Nancy, is extremely organized and intelligent. The youngest child, Kenyon, is a 15 year old boy who spends most of his time with electronics. Perry was the one who actually killed the Clutters, and Dick was just a bystander. Initially, Dick is the one comes up with the plan to kill the Clutters and when it’s time to kill the Clutters, he backs out. As the Clutters are going on with their everyday lives, the two men are driving to the town of Holcomb, where the family lives. A friend of Nancy’s from school, Nancy Ewalt, was dropped off at the Clutter’s to go to church. Upon entering the home, Nancy and Mrs. Kidwell, who works at the teacherage, realize the Clutters have not done anything they normally did on Sunday mornings. Mrs. Kidwell walks into Nancy’s room and realizes the whole family is dead. At the same time Dick and Perry are 400 miles away, Dick eating at his parents’ house and Perry asleep in a hotel
