I read the book In The Garden Of Beasts by Erik Larson. This book wasn’t particularly interesting to me, but I read it for the sake of my grade. It was enjoyable to get a new perspective of someone looking at Germany as a pleasant place instead of a cruel, depressing place that killed Jews. Though the truth was discovered later in the story, the author, Erik Larson, did a nice job sharing a new perspective on the topic of Nazi Germany. After recovering from World War 1, the United States were trying to avoid any more war and conflict. When World War 2 began, the US tried their hardest to stay neutral and not get involved. It doesn’t directly give many details on jewish people. However, since this book focuses on the start of the Holocaust, which was the systematic killing of millions of Jews, it does shine a light on them. The Americans are also depicted in a way that seems right to me. This is probably because it was written by an American, so he would know the American lifestyle and culture, including the way we act and speak. The book does focus on American politicians and government, but I will get into that later. The way he portrays the Dodd family, which are the main Americans in the book, is in a normal American way. In one aspect, the character Martha Dodd brings to life one of the very common problems we have in America today. Martha is William Dodd’s daughter. She was a very pretty, flirtatious young woman, and she was constantly in a romantic relationship with a guy whether it be a one night stand, or love at first sight. She married once, after being in countless relationships where either her, or her partner wanted marriage. This ended in a divorce, which was (and is) a very common problem in America. While Berlin’s divorce rate is 0.6%, America’s stands over sixty times more than that, at between 40-60%. Martha’s first marriage was “the only time [she] knew love at first sight...Never before had [she] loved and been loved so much and not had proposals or marriage within a short time!” (24-25). Her first marriage was the only time she considered to be ‘love at first sight’, which says a lot since she’s been with so many men before and after him. While it was ‘love at first sight’, it was the first time that a guy hadn’t proposed to her, while only knowing her for a short period of time. While this isn’t the case for most women, it shines a light on how a lot of American women are not very grounded with their
