In the fiction story, “Into the Beautiful North” by Luis Alberto Urrea, a group of girls set of on a mission to cross the border. Throughout the novel, Urrea presents multiple characters to the reader. Urrea creates all these characters to help enforce the theme of the novel. The characters could resemble people that Urrea may have encountered in his life or created them from his own personal experiences. The characterization and the characters all contribute to the novel’s theme; of always pushing through adversity and knowing they will be people to help through the struggles but also people to create more obstacles. Yolo is an athletic, tough, and physical girl but is mentally weak when faced with problems. Vampi like Yolo complains about how hard the journey is and that they should quit and go back home. Despite being emotional, Yolo and Vampi did help out through the journey and all the hard obstacles. They were the humor and jokesters. They both would try to lighten up the mood by making silly remarks. For example, in the novel the two are speaking about Nayeli and Atomiko, “‘Nayeli and Atomiko are going to get married,’ she said to Vampi. ‘Really?’ said Vampi. ‘We should go to Las Vegas,’ Yolo said. ‘Oh yes’ Vampi enthused. ‘Elvis’” (135). Yolo and Vampi had a sense of humor, so both of the women made jokes through the novel to help change the mood and district the others from their stressed emotions. Atomiko is this poor thug that protects the group and is the one who helps the group cross safely, after the group was caught by the border patrol. Atomiko helped find a safer way through an underground tunnel. Atomiko is significant to the novel them because he truly helps the group through problem and does it with not true purpose. In the beginning he was protecting them because he like Nayeli and Yolo but after the girls didn’t fall for him he continued to protect them. He stuck around to help through the groups journey because in a way he enjoyed being around a small family. A person helps their family regardless of the issue. Urrea uses Atomiko to display that he helps the group through caring for them and helping with a purpose which helps build the theme of the novel.
