With the development of science and technological advances, life began to change for the better. Long and tedious jobs are completed in hours, resulting in a rise in revenue because more work can be done at a faster time. In the 1600s when colonists first arrived from England and landed in the New World, they encountered new people and traditions. The exchange of ideas and literature occurred, and some cultures were assimilated. Over the course of 250 years, literature faced many changes. In Deb Burgauer’s article, “Reading Hawthorne’s “Rappaccini’s Daughter” – With Envy and Suspicion”, Burgauer shares her and her students' views of science’s impact in Rappaccini’s Daughter in regards to truth and beauty. As a teacher, Burgauer encourages her students to speculate and answer moral questions. In Hawthorne’s story, however, Burgauer is left with many unanswered questions, questions similar to what Hawthorne might have felt in his time. “Can “mad” science can be tempered to preserve and improve our lives, our civilizations, and our environments, or will science ruin beauty and life…?” (). Is science damaging to Romantics? To answer these questions, yes “mad” science can be tempered to improve the quality of life and science is not damaging to romantic literature. For the first question, consider our makeup. Many makeup products are made from plants and botanical experiments, improving our beauty. Science has also improved our health and quality of life. We now have improved medicines and have better knowledge of the world and how things work. In regards to romanticism in literature, science has helped make romance more intriguing in my opinion.
