In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” published in The Atlantic on July 2008, American writer Nicholas Carr comes to the realization that the constant usage of the internet is changing how the average person reads and remembers. Carr says: “The Web has been a godsend to me as a writer. Research that once required days in the stacks or periodical rooms of libraries can now be done in minutes”. Nicholas Carr believes that the internet is a valuable tool, but there are concerns based on how it is used. The author thinks that this can be seen in the fact that people are more likely to skim an article to try and get the information wanted, causing an easy and lazy way of achieving the wanted information. Nicholas Carr also provides the evidence that he isn’t the only person that he knows with this problem, “When I mention my troubles with reading to friends and acquaintances—literary types, most of them—many say they’re having similar experiences. The more they use the Web, the more they have to fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing”. Carr presents evidence of technology effects on the writer Friedrich Nietzsche, “Sometime in 1882, Friedrich Nietzsche bought a typewriter—a Malling-Hansen Writing Ball, to be precise. His vision was failing, and keeping his eyes focused on a page had become exhausting and painful, often bringing on crushing headaches. He had been forced to curtail his writing, and he feared that he would soon have to give it up.” Nicholas Carr states that the typewriter saves Mr. Nietzsche from just having to give up on writing, but it came at a cost.
