Isaac’s Storm Book Report Isaac’s Storm written by Erik Larson is an account of the fatal hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas in 1900. The book also delves into the life of Isaac Cline and his troubled relationship with his brother Joseph and the dishonesty of the Weather Bureau. Most of Erik Larson’s information comes from secondary sources because little Isaac Cline did not leave behind a lot of information about his life or the storm. Rescue workers found debris where a prosperous city stood just twenty four hours ago. The storm is estimated to have killed anywhere between 8,000 and 10,000 people The city rebuilt what the hurricane destroyed, and a seawall was built for protection from future storms, but Galveston was never able to become the flourishing city it once was. Houston continued its rapid growth, and passed Galveston in the once close race to be “The New York of the Gulf.” Isaac eventually was transferred to New Orleans where he was put in charge of a weather department. Joseph was transferred to Puerto Rico. After the storm, the two brothers’ bad blood resulted with them rarely speaking. I believe the main purpose of this book was to inform people about a deadly hurricane that devastated a flourishing city. This book tries to show readers that no matter how advanced technology becomes, nature has to continue to be taken seriously. The book also shows that the corruption of powerful figures can lead to the downfall of others. This is shown when the Weather Bureau received warnings from the Cubans that this terrible storm was coming toward Galveston, but they refused to acknowledge them. This book increased my knowledge on a topic, the hurricane that hit Galveston, that I knew next to nothing
