The climax of Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell is when Karana decides to try for the mainland where the rest of her tribe headed towards for the first time. It’s been a while after Ramo has died and Karana is getting antsy, wondering when the Aleuts are going to come back for her, if ever. Tired of waiting around, nit doing anything, Karana decides to set off for the mainland on her own. She begins to fix up one of the smaller canoes that had been left on the island and store enough food & water for her journey. Karana has been out on the sea, heading for the mainland, for less than a day, when she realizes the the canoe she is taking won’t be able to take her where she needs to be without killing her.
