For centuries animals have continued to be seen as just another piece of property. They have lacked proper representation which has led to severe hardship on their part. All animals whether they be farm animals, laboratory animals or household pets have to constantly undergo interminable suffering and that is not ok. Change is bound to happen, but the time is unknown. As of right now the only obvious and logical action that should be taken is establishing the Animal Bill of Rights. The constant ache that animals have to feel should come to a halt. It is absurd how humans have no respect whatsoever for other living creatures on the earth. In the article “A Change of Heart about Animals” by Jeremy Rifkin, he explains why animals should not have to suffer due to human behavior. For example, Rifkin states “our fellows creatures are more like us than we have ever imagined. They feel pain, suffer and experience stress, affection, excitement and love” (Rifkin 59). For instance, if we were to see a dog being kicked or being left in a hot car we would instantly be infuriated and ready to jump into action. However, if we were to see a pig being crammed into a small, hot and unsanitary cage or even see a pig being slaughtered right before our eyes, we would think of it as “normal.” Rifkin also states in his article, “Purdue University, has found that they (referring to pigs) crave affection and are easily depressed if isolated or denied playtime with each other ” (Rifkin 59). He even goes further as to saying that pigs should be provided with toys to prevent fights amongst them. Many people would automatically say that the idea is ridiculous, but if that was to have been said about household pets such as dogs and cats people would be leaving stores with bags filled of toys.
