In Chapter 2 for Of Mice and Men George and Lennie finally arrive in the Bunkhouse. When the old swamper named Candy came in to help out George and Lennie, he was telling them about how the boss was. Later on the boss came in and was interrogating George and Lennie because George was talking for Lennie and he was getting suspicious, thinking they were trying to pull something over him. After the boss left the Bunkhouse, Curley (the boss's son) came in and started talking to Lennie about if he is spoken to he needs to answer the person himself. George and Lennie share an unbreakable bond, despite their contrasting appearances and personalities with George being “small and quick”, while Lennie is “a huge man, shapeless of face, with large pale eyes and sloping shoulders” (Steinbeck 2). Even though they are so different, their personalities complement each other, and their undying friendship gives them hope and companionship in their desperate situations as migrant workers. Furthermore, throughout the novel, it is apparent that George takes care of Lennie through every obstacle he finds himself in, even though he is incapable of doing the same for George. Steinbeck also characterizes Lennie as innocent and animalistic to connect him to nature. He compares Lennie to animals in the barn describing the way he drinks water as, “snorting into the water like a horse”, and saying he “dabbled his big paw in the water” (Steinbeck 4-5).

The sole purpose of government, according to John Locke, was to support all citizens and their natural rights as well as protect and defend them at all times. As long as citizens were given their natural rights and equal treatment they were capable of civilly governing themselves. John Locke advised that a country’s government is in a binding social contract with its people; for the transfer of some rights to the government the people will in turn receive protection of their rights and pursuit of liberty and happiness. If ever violated this contract their own citizens would rebel against them. This dissolution can be a result of change in government, due to the violation of the citizen’s liberty.
